I’ve been working in the public sector for 30 years. I started when we were just on the cusp of accepting the idea that we needed mixed developments that built mixed communities, with a sense that the ‘60s and ‘70s had seen high density fracturing of communities. We had places where poor people lived and places where wealthy people lived and it didn’t work.

What the best places would look like would be a good social mix of housing, interspersed with public spaces that were genuinely public and not private and licensed for you to walk across.

And they would have a mixture of employment which was both highly local...
