The defining point was probably a long time ago. It was a realisation that, if you wanted to make change happen and you wanted to achieve things, you had to be prepared to put yourself forward for positions of responsibility and authority, with all the risks and crap that come with that.

That willingness to put myself forward for a range of leadership roles throughout my career, ultimately, led me to know that I wanted to be a chief executive.
