One watershed moment was when I was a young man, with a young family, and I got ill. I got post viral fatigue syndrome. ME. I was very ill and not able to work for a few years.

The safety net of the welfare state was there to help me and that solidified my, already quite well-developed, political values and principles. Having found myself in a position that I never thought I would be in, thank goodness for the welfare state.

I’ve always had that commitment to public service, recognising that, through no fault of their own, individuals need the helping hand of the state at different points in their lives.
