I was originally a policy person who got into regeneration through bidding for money, particularly from the European Union, the European Community as it then was then. So I have a very unconventional background: someone who wrote bids for things.

I met my wife because she worked in the education department at Redbridge Council and I used to deal with the European Social Fund programme at Redbridge. I was in the policy unit and no one else wanted to manage the ESF programme so I sort of picked it up, said: "I’ll do that".
